The word devourer can be paraphrased 'seed-eater.' In my mind I pictured the old serpent—the devil—slithering along on his belly, his forked tongue flickering out to eat all the seed that we haven't sown to God. What does it matter if the devil eats your seed? It matters a lot! harvest follows sowing, and there is no harvest without sowing. What seed you don't plant into the ground stays on top of the soil where the seed-eater can get to it. If the seed is eaten before it is planted, God has nothing to work with to produce a harvest in your life. And if there is no seed to plant and nothing for God to multiply, how can you expect to receive a harvest of miracles to meet your needs? Malachi 3:10-11 says that when you sow your tithes and offerings to God, He will rebuke the devourer—the seed-eater— for you. God will preserve your seed so you can plant it and receive miracles from Him. God's promise in Malachi is clear and valid for today: when you sow your tithe and offerings to Him as seeds of faith, He is going to be busy pouring you out a blessing that is uncontainable. So plant today. don't let your seed be devoured." ON DOCTRINE NOTE: Oral Roberts begins this note with an invalid comparison based on a wrong definition. The devourer is not a "seed-eater" but a devourer of the harvest that had already been planted and had come to fruition. Oral Roberts defines the devourer as the "seed-eater" in order to force the verses to conform to his "Seed Faith" doctrine, in which he defines money as the seed to be sown as a gift to his ministry. Instead of making his doctrine conform to the Scripture, he is willing to distort the meaning of the Scripture in order to make it conform to his teaching. His definition of the "devourer" as being the devil stretches the meaning of the text beyond reason. The devourer is not the devil, but the locust who come in hoards and strip the trees and fields of everything that is edible and the pests that infect the crops for which there was no defense. They do not eat the seed, but they eat the harvest, and God will prevent them from acting, "so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground . . ," vs. 11. The comparison of the "devourer" to the "seed-eater" and then to the devil is a case of redefining a term until it suits Oral Roberts' purpose. The devil is not a serpent slithering on his belly eating seeds, because serpents do not eat seeds; they are carnivores. The final blow to Oral Roberts' teaching about Malachi 3:10-11, is that he defines the tithes and offerings as "seeds," when in fact, they are the fruits or the final product after seeds have already been planted and grown to maturity. There are no seeds mentioned in the verses. It is the harvest that was to be taken to the storehouse, ". . . so that there may be food in My house . . ," vs. 10. If it had been the seed that was taken to the storehouse, there would not have been a harvest! Again, Oral Roberts uses a redefinition of terms and then with a clever manipulation of words attempts to fool the reader into believing that Malachi 3:10-11 is an example of his teaching about "Seed Faith." The reader who does not read the verses and study them in light of what they actually say, will eventually do what Oral Roberts intends for them to do, which is to sow some "seed" into his ministry, their "best seed" or the biggest offering of money that they can give.
