THAT'S GOD'S PROMISE!
Oral Roberts
Part 1 of 2 Parts

"The Bible teaches that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He doesn't change. His promises in His Word are true for Christians today. Therefore, this promise in Malachi 3:10-11 is for us:

Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes.

God's promise in Malachi has two parts. First, when God says, Prove me now herewith, He is saying, 'If you will do your part, I will do My part. Put Me to the test. Let Me show you that I will do what I say.' He promises to pour us out a blessing so great that we can't contain it all. It will be too much for us to hold!

God doesn't give us a blessing that is like a self-contained lake, but one that is like a river. His blessing flow to us and through us. Just as a river causes life to spring forth all along its banks-rich, fruit-bearing trees and plants which draw nourishment from the river's water-so we are blessed when God pours us out a blessing. And at the same time, His blessing flows through us to others.

According the Scripture, when you give to God and prove Him with your giving, you are in a position not only to be blessed abundantly in your own life but to be a blessing to all those around you. That's God's promise!"

ON DOCTRINE NOTE:
Oral Roberts begins his note with an illogical statement of cause and effect. He claims that since God is, has and always will be the same, then the promises in Malachi 3:10-11 apply to Christians today. The fact that God is, has and always will be the same, says nothing about the promises made to Israel in Malachi 3:10-11, being promises for Christians today. If Oral Roberts' comparison was true, then Christians today should be observing the Law as found in the Old Testament and giving sacrifices of animals on an altar. If Oral Roberts' comparison was true, then God violated His character by commanding Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on an altar and then commanding him not to do so, Genesis 22:2, 11-12. God does not always act in the same manner in every situation, and a promise to one individual or nation is not necessarily a promise for every individual or nation, regardless of what Oral Roberts may claim to be the case.

Oral Roberts would like the promises in Malachi 3:10-11 to apply to Christians today, because he wishes to tie the verses into the "Seed Faith" (Giving and Receiving) doctrine that he created, in which money given to a ministry is considered to be giving to God, and in his "Seed Faith" concept, that money will not only result in the giver receiving faith, the money will also be returned to the giver a hundredfold. Conveniently, the ministry that is to receive the "Seed Faith" offering is Oral Roberts Ministries, and it is not the ministry that dispenses faith or returns a hundredfold to the giver, but it is supposed to be God. The ministry gets to use the money given without an obligation to the giver.

The problem with his connection, is that "Seed Faith" is not what is being discussed by God in Malachi, but the legal obligation to tithe that was commanded of Israel by God, which they had failed to do, vv. 8-9. In order to make the verses apply to Christians today, Oral Roberts must also claim that tithing is part of New Testament teaching, which he attempts to do in other articles.

The definition of "the devourer" as being Satan, is also an attempt to connect the verses with Oral Roberts' "Seed Faith" doctrine by inferring that "Seed Faith" money not given to a ministry will be "devoured" or taken away by Satan, so it is better to give the money and receive faith and money in return than to keep the money and have Satan take it away. However, the verses indicate that the tithes were farm products such as crops and animals, "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house" vs. 10. Oral Roberts' problem, is that the "devourer" in Malachi is not Satan, but is the locust that threatened the harvests, ". . .so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field," vs. 11. Nothing is said about the "devourer" taking money that was not given as a tithe.
