DAILY GUIDE TO MIRACLES from Oral Roberts Ministries Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 http://orm.cc THE REAL JUBILEE Billy Joe Daugherty Victory Christian Center www.victorytulsa.org "If you've had years stolen from you by sickness and disease, by broken family situations, or by financial reversals, take heart! God says in Joel 2:25 that He restores to you the years that have been lost! This is the message of Jubilee. In biblical times, every 50 years Israel celebrated the Year of Jubilee. Jubilee was a time when God would set right what had gone wrong throughout the previous years. Whatever land had been lost would be returned to its original owners. Those who had become slaves were given their freedom. And all debts were cleared from the books. It was a time like no other. Jesus came, He read these words in the synagogue at Nazareth: The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me...to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity], to proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the free favors of God profusely abound] (Luke 4:18-19 AMP). Then He said, Today this Scripture has been fulfilled while you are present and hearing (v. 21). Jesus was proclaiming that He was the Jubilee! What that means to you today is that Jesus came to restore your losses. Whatever has been broken, He can mend. Where there is devastation, He can bring healing. God has provided the way. Your part is to believe Him, step out in faith, and claim it!" ON DOCTRINE NOTE: If a person does not actually read Joel 2:25, then they will not realize that what Billy Joe Daugherty says about the verse is not actually found in the verse. The verse says nothing about restoration of years taken by sickness, disease, broken family situations or lost finances. The verse is quoted as follows: "So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you." (NKJV)What is being restored, are the years of crop failures as a result of the locust-type pestilence that was sent directly by God. There is no physical human disease or illness noted, no family issues or financial failures that have been reversed. The idea that God will somehow make the life of the Christian a perfect refuge from the realities of a fallen world cannot be found in Joel 2:25, because the promises found there were made to Israel and not to the Christian church. The issue in relation to Luke 4:18-19 (Isaiah 61:1-2a), is the same as that found in Joel 2:25. The verses are quoted as follows: "'The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.'" (NKJV)Nothing is said in the passage about the restoration of financial losses, or the mending of family disputes or broken marriages, or adding years to the life of an individual that were ruined by illness or disease. When the message of the gospel is promoted as coming to Jesus Christ in order to become rich or to reverse family difficulties or obtain healing, then a deception is presented that will only result in disillusionment when the realities of the Christian life become apparent. What does a person do when their new-found faith is rejected by family and friends, when a spouse leaves the marriage as a result of unbelief, when the person finds that they have cancer or their business fails? The Christian life is not a panacea for all of the sufferings in this life, as can be attested by those who are persecuted and martyred throughout the world for their faith. Jesus Christ quoted Isaiah 61:1-2a, because: a. He came to preach the gospel to the poor in spirit, Matthew 5:3. b. He came to comfort the grieving, John 16:20. c. He came to give freedom to those who were captives of sin and judgment, John 8:32. d. He came to give spiritual sight to those blinded by the god of this world, John 8:12. e. He came to set free those who were captives of false religious leaders, Matthew 23:15. f . He came to proclaim that now was the acceptable time of salvation, 2 Corinthians 6:2. When preachers make promises regarding their explanations of Scriptures that they claim are part of the Christian life but do not happen as they have said, then explanations must be provided as to why those promises do not actually happen in the real world. Unfortunately, the explanations almost always conclude that the problem does not reside with them and their claims, but is the fault of the individual believer who it is said did not have enough faith, or harbored fear in their life which prevented God from giving the blessings that are claimed to be promised in verses where they are not even mentioned, or they have not given their "best seed," meaning the biggest offering of money that they could possibly present to some particular ministry. Under those circumstances, believers are subjected to a cruel hoax, and place themselves under a bondage of performance which they can never accomplish.
