CONVERSATIONS ON WORD OF FAITH
Benny Hinn and Rick Godwin

The Word of Faith Challenge

Wednesday, September 22

Dear Gary,

Hopefully this will arrive at the correct person who wrote the severe criticism of both Benny Hinn and Rick Godwin. I'm sorry to say but I'm sure you believe your fulfilling a watchman's role as defined in the book of Ezekiel 33. But sadly to say i feel you've not done your homework well enough. You've brought scathing judgements and attacks against two fellow Christians, who are your brothers firstly before they are your targets. You have used arguments through which i could sail a battleship and not be noticed, and have let yourself down badly. Is this the sum of your ministry ? Tearing people apart, for I'm sure you are endowed with gifts by our Lord for the building of the body and not the total faultfinding of it. I would conclude you are not part of the Pentecostal persuasion and that is fine. There would be much i could write on a website of the heresies and erroneous doctrine that is found in many aspects of the denominational established churches, but who does that build up or edify.

If your going to bring such attacks against men who many consider not only to be leaders, but also friends, brothers and fellow Christians. I would like to request that you give a clear, concise and grace filled argument as to why we all should be careful in listening to some of the people that are preaching today. I believe that it is one of the poorest forms of preaching or ministry to just tear down people and would indeed believe that you have multiple gifts that would be better employed and enjoyed in the building , correcting in love and pursuit of the purposes of God. Yours sincerely,

Welcome to On Doctrine, K—.
Thank you for your visit and message on the Contact page.

I have found it interesting over the last few years, to see how various people attempt to defend their teachers. Basically it comes down to three main arguments:
(1) The teachers are considered to be the anointed and immune from criticism, 1 Chronicles 16:22.
(2) To reveal that a teacher deviates from Scripture and prophesies falsely or teaches a false salvation message (no matter who they might be), is to be judgmental, unkind and unloving, which supposedly invalidates the comparison of the teacher to the Scripture.
(3) The teachers are Christian brethren and to criticize them for teaching false doctrine or being false teachers is to tear them down instead of building them up.

Your position basically falls into the third category. The problem with your position, is that you never confront false doctrine or false prophecy, and in the process, you tear down the authority of the Scripture in order to build up the authority of your teacher.

I have always understood the definition of a false prophet to be a person who prophesies falsely. If they claim to have received prophecies from God that do not come to pass within the specified time given, those prophecies are false, and the prophet is a false prophet. If you have a different definition, then perhaps you will explain it to me from the Scripture.

I have several questions to ask:
1. Who has the authority, the Bible or the teacher?
2. If a person claims to be an anointed leader (especially a 'doubly' anointed leader) and claims to receive revelations from God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit almost on a daily basis, why do they speak false prophecies and claim that those prophecies came directly from God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit?
3. Why do those persons also teach false doctrine?
4. Why is it, when false prophecies are revealed, the attempt is made to defend those persons instead of admitting to the authority of the Scripture?
5. Did you read the list of false prophecies that Benny Hinn has given? I noted four of them that are documented. There are more that could be listed, but since it only takes one false prophecy to make a false prophet, I presumed that four times as many would be quite sufficient.
See: Benny Hinn Prophecies
6. How do you justify those prophecies in relation to Benny Hinn's claim to be an anointed prophet by God, the Scriptural mandate in Deuteronomy 18:20-22, and the numerous other Scriptures which condemn those who prophesy falsely and claim that God gave them the revelation?

The association of Benny Hinn and Rick Godwin is clear enough, and my questions for Rick Godwin are the same as I have listed above, in addition to the one implied: How can a person associate in ministry with a false prophet?

I quite understand the fact that you find On Doctrine to be offensive, because you would like for me to affirm the leaders that you have chosen rather than the opposite being the case. The difficulty in your approach is that you view your leaders from the wrong perspective. You assume first, that they are anointed, speak correct doctrine and give true prophecies, rather than first comparing what they teach and claim with the Scripture and then accepting [the] judgment and authority of the Scripture as to what they represent. No leader is immune from scrutiny by the Scripture, as Luke wrote in relation to the Bereans and the teaching of the apostle Paul, Acts 17:10-12.

You have taken the authority of the Scripture and placed it in the mouths of your teachers, so, the truth of what they teach will be no better than who they are, rather than truth being what is the revealed word of God in the Scripture.

I am not of the Pentecostal persuasion, for some very good reasons, however, whether I am Pentecostal or not has no bearing on the reality that Benny Hinn prophecies falsely and Rick Godwin supports him in ministry. The Pentecostal beliefs of Benny Hinn and Rick Godwin are not the issues in that equation, because there are many Pentecostal believers who are true Christians, but there are no true prophets who give false prophecies, and no false prophet is anointed by God, whether they be Pentecostal or otherwise.

Sincerely,

Gary A. Hand
