1816 - June 10, 1900

J.C. Ryle was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire County, England. He went to Eton college and then to Oxford where he finished his studies. in 1837. He was ordained, in 1841, by Bishop Charles Sumner of Winchester as a minister in the Anglican Church. In 1880 he was named as the first Bishop of the diocese of Liverpool. He was a believer in the reformed faith held to the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion, as expressed by the Church of England. He retired in 1900 at age 83 and died later the same year.

"Idolatry"
"Our text for today may seem at first to be hardly needed in our country. In an age of education and intelligence, we might almost fancy it is waste of time to tell us to 'flee from idolatry.' I am bold to say that this is a great mistake. I believe that we have come to a time when the subject of idolatry demands a thorough and searching investigation. I believe that idolatry is near us, all around us, and in the midst of us, to a very fearful extent. The second commandment, in one word, is in danger."
"The Lord's Supper"
"I firmly believe that ignorant views or false doctrine about this ordinance lie at the root of some of the present divisions of professing Christians. Some neglect it altogether; some completely misunderstand it; some exalt it to a position it was never meant to occupy, and turn it into an idol."
"Pharisees And Sadducees"
"The danger of which He warns them is false doctrine. He says nothing about the sword of persecution, or the love of money, or the love of pleasure. All these things no doubt were perils and snares to which the souls of the Apostles were exposed; but against these things our Lord raises no warning voice here. His warning is confined to one single point: "The yeast of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees." We are not left to conjecture what our Lord meant by that word "yeast." The Holy Spirit, a few verses after the very text on which I am now dwelling, tells us plainly that by yeast was meant the "doctrine" of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."
"Riches And Poverty"
"But, after all, it is one thing to admire the brilliant composition of this parable, and quite another to understand the spiritual lessons it contains. The eye of the intellect can often see beauties while the heart remains asleep, and sees nothing at all. Hundreds read Pilgrim's Progress with deep interest, to whom the struggle for the celestial city is foolishness. Thousands are familiar with every word of the parable before us today, who never consider how it applies to their own situation. Their conscience is deaf to the cry, which ought to ring in their ears as they read, 'You are the man!' Their heart never turns to God with the solemn question, 'Lord, is this my picture? Lord, is it me?'"
