RICHARD L. MAYHUE

American Protestant Minister And Educator

RICHARD L. MAYHUE Prior to seminary, Dr. Mayhue served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1971. From 1975 to 1977 he served as an assistant pastor at Grace Brethren Church, Columbus, Ohio, and was director of the Worthington Bible Institute. From 1977 to 1980, Dr.Mayhue taught New Testament and Pastoral Ministries at Grace Theological Seminary, Winona Lake, Indiana. From 1980 to 1984, he was on the pastoral staff at Grace Community Church where he served as an associate to Dr. John F. MacArthur in a teaching ministry and as director for the Shepherds' Conferences. From 1984 to 1989, he pastored Grace Brethren Church, Long Beach, California. Dr. Mayhue has authored, contributed to, and/or edited twenty books, plus numerous periodical and journal articles. He serves on the pastoral staff of Grace Community Church, and serves on the boards of Slavic Gospel Association and Capitol Ministries. He joined the faculty of The Master's Seminary, Sun Valley, California, in 1989 and was appointed as Senior Vice-President and Dean of the Seminary in 1990. In November 2000 Dr. Mayhue also assumed the role of Senior Vice-President and Provost of The Master's College, Newhall, California. Isaiah 53:4-5 raises the question, "For what did Christ atone?" or more specifically, "Is physical healing in the atonement?" Outside Isaiah 53, Scriptures touching on Christ's atonement in Leviticus and Hebrews deal only with sin, not sickness. The context and language of Isa 53:3-12 address sin alone. A broad range of Scriptures teach that Christ died to deal with humankind's sin dilemma. Matthew 8:16-17 uses an illustration of physical healing to demonstrate a spiritual truth about the Christian's resurrection hope of being sinless and thus in perfect health. First Pet 2:24, studied in both broad context (2:18-25) and narrow (2:24-25), reasons that Christ atoned for sin, not sickness. Therefore, the conclusion is that physical healing is not in the atonement, but rather comes through the atonement after resurrection, because only then does the atonement eliminate the moral cause of physical infirmities, which is sin in one's personal experience. This view of God, which is not a mediating position between the classical view and the Aminian view of God's foreknowledge, is rather an extreme view outside the acceptable and reasonable boundaries of orthodoxy. GP focuses more on God's ignorance than it does on God's omniscience. Thus, GP is found to be biblically deficient in its own defense and is to be rejected as a heresy which measurably distorts the biblical portrayal of God as sovereign ruler over all." From chapter 8, The Healing Promise "Recall the question which we asked at the beginning: 'Is there healing in the atonement?' My answer is 'Yes!' but with this explanation: There is healing 'through' the atonement or 'as a result of' the atonement, but it is never promised to believers for the present. When sin is ultimately removed, physical healing for believers will be in full-but only in the future, when our bodies have been redeemed by the power of God (Romans 8:23; Revelation 21:4)."
