- CHARNOCK, STEPHEN 1628-1680
"A Discourse Upon The Fifth Of November"
On God As A Deliverer
"The time of the church's depression is the time of God's exaltation. He waits for the extremity to
lift up himself. When paleness is upon the face of his people, when the cedars of Lebanon hang
their heads, when the church's beauty seems a lamentable deformity, and Sharon is like a
wilderness, then will God arise, Isa. 33:9, 10. God never builds up Sion, but he ordains all things
in a method for his appearance in the greatest glory: Ps. 102:16, 'When the Lord shall build up
Sion, he shall appear in his glory,' that is, when the church is destitute,
ver.17."
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"A Divine And Supernatural Light, Immediately Imparted To The Soul By The Spirit Of
God, Shown To Be Both Scriptural And Rational Doctrine"
That there is such a thing as a spiritual and divine light immediately imparted to the soul by God,
of a different nature from any that is obtained by natural means.--And on this subject I would, I.
Show what this divine light is. II. How it is given immediately by God, and not obtained by
natural means. III. Show the truth of the doctrine. And then conclude with a brief
improvement.
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"God Glorified In
Man's Dependence"
"'God is glorified in the work of redemption in this, that there appears in it so absolute and
universal a dependence of the redeemed on him.' -- Here I propose to show, 1st, That
there is an absolute and universal dependence of the redeemed on God for all their good. And,
2dly, That God hereby is exalted and glorified in the work of
redemption."
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"God's
Sovereignty In The Salvation Of Men"
"The sovereignty of God is his absolute, independent right of disposing of all creatures according
to his own pleasure."
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"The Sole
Consideration That God Is God, Sufficient To Still All Objections To His
Sovereignty"
"In objecting and quarreling about the righteousness of God's laws and threatenings, and his
sovereign dispensations towards you and others, you oppose his divinity, you show your
ignorance of his divine greatness and excellency, and that you cannot bear that he should have
divine honor."
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"Treatise On
Grace"
"That Common And Saving Grace Differ, Not Only In Degree, But In Nature And
Kind."
- EDWARDS, JONATHAN 1703-1758
"The Wisdom
Of God, Displayed In The Way Of Salvation"
"The wisdom appearing in the way of salvation by Jesus Christ is far above the wisdom of the
angels."

"Election And
Predetination: The Sovereignty Of God In Salvation"
A Grace Bridge Panel Discussion - John F. MacArthur, Phil Johnson, Richard Mayhue and Carey
Hardy - September 26, 2001
"This past Wednesday evening, we began a study of the book of Ephesians. That's what we're
doing this year. And, of course, the very first Chapter Verse 4 introduces a wonderful, important
doctrine in scripture. It's the doctrine of election. The following verse then gives us the concept of
predestination. It was wonderful. I can speak from personal experience in doing that study; it was
wonderful to begin delving into those great truths. But to some people, these doctrines are
confusing. Tonight, we hope to bring clarity to these truths. And we're going to attempt to do this
by way of a panel discussion, as you see, and some questions that I have accumulated that
hopefully will stimulate that discussion."

"God: Is He? Who Is He?"
Sermon 1 - "God: Is He? Who Is He? What Is He
Like?"
Sermon 2 - "God: Is He? Who Is He? What Is He
Like?"
Sermon 3 - "God: Is He? Who Is He? What is He
Like?"
"The Bible says this about God in Psalm 90, verse 2: "Before the mountains were brought forth,
or ever Thou hadst form the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God."
Now there's a great doctrinal statement about God. It tells us that God is the only God, Thou art
God. It tells us that God is the eternal God, from everlasting to everlasting Thou art God. It tells
us that God is the creator God. Before the mountains were made, before You formed the earth
and the world. That's quite a statement about God. God is the only God. God is the eternal God.
God is the creator God."
- MacARTHUR, JOHN F. 1939
"The Sovereignty Of God In Salvation"
Ephesians 1:3-14
"Salvation is not a result of the will of man. It is not a result of the merit of man. It is not a result
of some religious sacrifice on man's part. It is not a result of the love of man. It is not a result of
the good intention of man. It is not a result of the purpose of man. And it is not to the praise and
glory of man. Every aspect of salvation is born out of the purpose and the will and the plan of
God that when it is accomplished it may be solely and only to the praise and the glory of God.
God has saved us in order that He might be glorified, therefore all in our salvation belongs to His
credit."
- MAYHUE, RICHARD L.
"The Impossibility of 'God Of The Possible'"
"Open Theism in general and Greg Boyd's GP in particular have been taken "captive through
philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men . . " (Col 2:8). This view of
God, which is not a mediating position between the classical view and the Aminian view of God's
foreknowledge, is rather an extreme view outside the acceptable and reasonable boundaries of
orthodoxy. GP focuses more on God's ignorance than it does on God's omniscience. Thus,
GP is found to be biblically deficient in its own defense and is to be rejected as a heresy
which measurably distorts the biblical portrayal of God as sovereign ruler over
all."
- PIPER, JOHN S. 1946-present
"Does God Make Mistakes"
A Response to Greg Boyd's Treatment of Jeremiah 3:6-7, 19-20
"I deal with Dr. Boyd's interpretation of Jeremiah 3:6-7, 19:20 as an example of the kind of
difficulties he gets into, even though he claims to be following a simple, face-value hermeneutic.
He gives the impression that, on the face of it, this text, and many others, are clear and simple
illustrations of God's openness to an uncertain future. But on careful examination, his own
interpretation involves problems even greater than the traditional one he rejects."

"The Enormous Ignorance Of God"
When God Doesn't Know The Future Choices Of Man
"For God not to know future volitions of humans is not a small ignorance but a huge one,
unimaginably huge. It is, for example, not a periodic ignorance, but a continual one; not a narrow
ignorance, but a universally human one; not an insignificant ignorance, but a tremendously
significant one; not a confined ignorance, but a diverse one (relating to all things a person can
choose)."
- PIPER, JOHN S. 1946-present
"Is The Glory Of God At Stake In God's Foreknowledge Of Human
Choices?"
"Two things are crucial to note here: one is that Jesus foreknows the evil deed of Judas with
certainty. The other is that Jesus himself says that this foreknowledge is part of his glory as divine:
"I am telling you before it comes to pass, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am"
(John 13:19). If Evangelicals have a passion for the glory of Christ, we must join him in affirming,
not denying, his ability to foreknow with certainty human choices without removing moral
accountability. It's his glory to know them."
- SPURGEON, CHARLES H. 1868-1956
"The Immutability Of God"
"There are three things this morning. First of all, an unchanging God; secondly, the
persons who derive benefit from this glorious attribute, 'the sons of Jacob;' and thirdly, the
benefit they so derive, they 'are not consumed.' We address ourselves to these points."
WHITE, JAMES 1963-present
"The Nature Of God - The Triunity Of God"
"The doctrine of the Trinity is based on three Biblical truths that together form its foundation: 1.
There is only one God (monotheism); 2. There are three Persons - the Father, Son and Holy
Spirit. This is in direct contradiction of modalism, Sabellianism, or the "Jesus Only" teachings that
deny the separate personhood of Father, Son and Spirit; 3. There is full equality of the Persons.
This is in direct contradiction of Arianism and all systems that would deny the full Deity and
equality of the Son and the Spirit. Each of these truths is part of God's revelation of Himself, and
no system can claim to be based on the Bible unless these truths are taken into account. The
denial of any one of these Biblical teachings leads directly to heresy and false doctrine - denial
of monotheism leads to polytheism (such as in Mormonism); denial of the three Persons leads into
modalism (such as the United Pentecostal movement); and denial of the equality of the Persons
leads to subordination-ism (Jehovah's Witnesses, the Way International,
etc.)."
