"Grace Reigning In Election"
"'Vain man would be wise, though he be born like a wild ass's colt.' Accordingly, he finds fault
with election, as a mere system of arbitrary partiality and favoritism; and tells us that if there be
such a thing as total helplessness in man, and sovereign election in God, then man is not to blame
if he be lost. Man's entire apostasy and death in sin, so that he cannot save himself, and God's
entire supremacy, so that He saves whom He will, are doctrines exceedingly distasteful to human
pride. But they are Scriptural."

"Election And
Predetination: The Sovereignty Of God In Salvation"
A Grace Bridge Panel Discussion - John F. MacArthur, Phil Johnson, Richard Mayhue and Carey
Hardy - September 26, 2001
"This past Wednesday evening, we began a study of the book of Ephesians. That's what we're
doing this year. And, of course, the very first Chapter Verse 4 introduces a wonderful, important
doctrine in scripture. It's the doctrine of election. The following verse then gives us the concept of
predestination. It was wonderful. I can speak from personal experience in doing that study; it was
wonderful to begin delving into those great truths. But to some people, these doctrines are
confusing. Tonight, we hope to bring clarity to these truths. And we're going to attempt to do this
by way of a panel discussion, as you see, and some questions that I have accumulated that
hopefully will stimulate that discussion."

"What Does The Bible Teach
About Election?"
"Election is the act of God whereby in eternity past He chose those who will be
saved."
- HODGE, CHARLES 1797-1878
"For Whom Did Christ Die?"
"This is a question between Augustinians and Anti-Augustinians. The former believing that God
from all eternity having elected some to everlasting life, had a special reference to their salvation
in the mission and work of his Son. The latter, denying that there has been any such election of a
part of the human family to salvation maintain that the mission and work of Christ had an equal
reference to all mankind."

1939
"Chosen By God"
"Now the essence of this salutation as Peter begins his letter is to
emphasize that those to whom he writes are chosen according to the foreknowledge
of God the Father. And thus does Peter take a theological plunge of profoundly
deep proportions at the very outset of this letter. The lesson for us tonight
is going to deal with the subject of election, or being chosen by God. "

"Who Chose Whom?" - The Doctrine Of Election
"This doctrine is at one and the same time, essential to understanding the church, and largely
resented by the church, and therein lies part of the problem. I don't think it's wrong to assume
that most people, who call themselves believers, do not accept the doctrine of sovereign election,
and this fact alone skews severely their ecclesiology. So what we're talking about here is not
something esoteric, but what we re talking about in this discussion is something completely
endemic to the character and nature of the church, which informs how we do ministry."

SERMON 1 -"The Elect Obtained it, The Rest Were
Hardened"
Romans 11:7-10
SERMON 2 -"Pastoral Thoughts On The Doctrine Of
Election"
Romans 11:5-7
"Then Paul says in Romans 11:7b: 'The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened.' This is a
tremendously important statement for understanding how salvation happens. 'The elect obtained
it.' Obtained what? Obtained right standing with God. Obtained faith and justification and
salvation. This is what Paul had said in verse 5: 'At the present time there is a [saved] remnant,
chosen by grace.' So he says in verse 7, The 'chosen' obtain it - obtain a standing in the remnant,
the redeemed, the justified, the saved. What then of the rest, Paul? If the remnant exists because
of election and sovereign grace, then what are you saying about the rest? Paul answers (verse 7b):
'The rest were hardened.'"

"The Freedom and Justice of God in Unconditional Election"
"The Fame of His Name and the Freedom of Mercy"
"The doctrine of God's unconditional election is so different from what most of you grew up with
that you not only have a hard time believing it is in the Bible, but also a hard time feeling that it is
good news. So I am swimming against a doubly difficult current in these messages from Romans
9. On the one hand, I believe that is exactly the doctrine that Romans 9 teaches, and on the other
hand, I believe that doctrine is very good news. So I must do my best both to show you that it is
there in the text, and that it is good news. That's my job in these days. It is humanly impossible,
but with God all things are possible. So, Lord, please help me."
- TURRETIN, FRANCIS 1623-1687
"Effectual Calling"
This calling is an act of the grace of God in Christ by which he calls men dead in sin and lost in
Adam through the preaching of the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit, to union with Christ
and to the salvation obtained in him.
- WARFIELD, BENJAMIN B. 1851-1921
"Election"
"Certainly it is equally true that where no election is, neither is there salvation. Since all the
salvation there is, is of grace, and grace is of election, there is of course no salvation where there
is no election. But this does not mean that election excludes from salvation. What election does
and all that election does, is to bring into salvation. It is not where it is, but only where it is not,
that salvation fails."
- WHITE, THOMAS
"Effectual Calling"
There are some persons in the world that are effectually called; or, which is all one,
who are "called according to the purpose of God." There is a call of
the gospel that is not effectual: of this our Saviour speaketh, when he saith, "Many are
called, but few chosen." (Matt. 20:16.) How many of the poor ministers of the gospel may
complain of multitudes in this generation, saying, with the children that sat in the market-place
"We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have
not lamented!"(Luke 7:32.) "Neither the delightful airs of mercy, nor the doleful
ditties of judgment, have moved you." But the election will certainly obtain; and the call
that is "according to God's purpose," reacheth not ears only, but hearts also:
"The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of
God." (John 5:25.)
