It does not seem possible that a religious group, claiming the Bible as one of it's scriptures, could
be polytheistic (believing in many gods). However this is the case with the Mormon church, which
teaches that every male Mormon can one day be a god, just like the God of the Bible (although
not all will be). Not only can they be gods, they can each father millions of spirit children in the
next life that can also become gods and that process will continue forever, producing a never
ending procession of new gods, for eternity. The following quotes from Mormon leaders prove
the matter beyond doubt: "We were begotten by our father in heaven; the person of our Father in Heaven was begotten on a previous heavenly world by His Father; and again, he was begotten by a still more ancient Father, and so on from generation to generation, from one heavenly world to another still more ancient..." LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 132, 1853. "...men, through obedience, attain to the fullness of all knowledge and become gods...they exist first as spirits, then as men clothed with mortal flesh, then as gods clothed with immortal tabernacles." LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 130, 1853. "After men...have become gods...they have the power then of propagating their species in spirit; and that is the first of their operations with regard to organizing a world. Power is then given to them to organize the elements, and then commence the organization of tabernacles. how can they do it? Have they to go to that earth? Yes, an Adam will have to go there, and he cannot do without Eve; he must have Eve to commence the work of generation, and they will go into the garden, and continue to eat and drink of the fruits of the corporeal world, until this grosser matter is diffused sufficiently through their celestial bodies to enable them, according to the established laws, to produce mortal tabernacles for their spiritual children." LDS Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p. 275, 1852. The process begins on one planet where a "spiritual father, a god" and his many wives have millions of "spirit children". Then the father (god) organizes planets for those children. Two of his spirit children are placed on one of those planets (they are husband and wife, but also must be brother and sister) where they eat of the "temporal" food and breathe of the "temporal" air and infuse into themselves the "temporal" nature of that world, including sinful dealings, so they can know the difference between good and evil. After infusing enough of the temporal nature, they are capable of producing "temporal" children on this earth and are commanded to be "fruitful and multiply". The "heavenly Father" sends his other spirit children into this temporal world, where they inhabit the bodies of the infant children produced by the couple. The couple, along with their children, worship their father, (the spiritual father of the couple) who lives on his own planet, and he is referred to as their "Heavenly Father". Those children have children and their children have children, until all the "spirit children" from the other world have been placed into human infant children, in order that they might follow the beliefs of the Mormon religion and eventually become gods themselves. "Mankind are here because they are the offspring of parents {Adam and Eve} who were first brought here from another planet, and power was given them to propagate their species." LDS Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, p. 285, 1859. It becomes apparent, that by following the process, Adam must have dutifully obeyed the pattern set down by Mormon belief and will also become a god and will been assigned to his own planet with Eve and his many other wives or, perhaps he is already a god. This leads to the question of who are Mormons on this earth to worship as their "Father in Heaven"? Should it be Adam or Adam's father? One answer (out of several beliefs that the Mormon church has held) is in the following quotes: "Our father Adam helped to make this earth, it was created expressly for him, and after it was made he and his companions came here. He brought one of his wives with him, and she was called Eve..." LDS Prophet Brigham Young, Deseret News, June 18, 1873, p. 308, 1859. "He {Adam} was the person who brought the animals and the seeds from other planets to this world... You may read and believe what you please as to what is found written in the Bible. Adam was made from the dust of an earth, but not from the dust of this earth." LDS Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 3, p. 319, 1856. "I have learned by experience that there is but one God that pertains to this people, and He is the God that pertains to this earth - the first man." LDS President Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, p. 1, 1856. Brigham Young spoke double-talk when he talked about the creation of Adam from the dust of another earth. The doctrine of his own church states that Adam would have been a spirit child of his father and mother and not created from the dust of an earth. However, that minor detail did not prevent the doctrine from being presented, believed and adopted. It is clear that very early in the development of the Mormon church the Adam-God doctrine was preached and believed. It was believed, by Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball, that Adam was to be worshipped as the "Father in Heaven". Since that time, Mormons have rejected the Adam-God doctrine and labeled the proponents of it as "deluded cultists," (Church News, March 20, 1982, page 5). However, this creates a great problem for Mormons, since their Presidents and Prophets speak under the "inspiration" of God and to label them as "heretics" or "cultists" means that the words of none of the "Presidents" or "Prophets" could be trusted. However, since the Adam-God doctrine did not fit into the convenient doctrinal plan of the ongoing leadership, it was "politically-religiously correct" to abandon it and not deal with the consequences of the diminished authority of its leadership. The idea that Adam was to be worshipped in this world, as god, does not fit well into Mormon theology, as the "Heavenly Father" of this world should have been Adam's father. However, several generations of Mormons believed the false doctrine, and the "Heavenly Father" apparently didn't know what was happening, because he isn't omniscient (all-knowing) or omnipresent (present everywhere) as taught in Mormon theology, and was not able to correct the error. Therefore, several generations of Mormons were led into, and believed an error. This diversion into divergent theology within the Mormon church shows the fallacy of human ideas that masquerade as "revelations" from God. It might be that the Mormon church wishes to forget the episode of the Adam-God doctrine, but the doctrine of polytheism continues, unabated, being propagated from the beginning of the Mormon church as noted in the quotes to follow: "How many earths are there? ...they are continually coming into existence, and undergoing changes and passing through the same experience that we are passing through... Sin is upon every earth that ever was created. Consequently every earth has it's redeemer, and every earth has it's tempter..." LDS Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 14, p. 71, 1870. "The inhabitants of each world have their own personal father whose attributes they worship... Thus will worlds and systems of worlds, ...be multiplied in endless succession through the infinite depths of boundless space..." LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, pp. 134 - 135, 1853. "The Fullness of Truth, dwelling in an endless succession of past generations would produce an endless succession of personal Gods, each possessing equal wisdom, power, and glory with all the rest." LDS Apostle Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 132, 1853 According to Mormon doctrine there are already an infinite number of gods because their progression stretches back into endless time which has no beginning. There will be an increasing infinite number in the future as the progression continues into endless time. This is polytheism at the maximum; an infinite number of gods. With such a radical theology, Mormon doctrine cannot stand under the scrutiny of Biblical teaching. The Mormon church must claim that the Bible is inaccurate or has been corrupted in order to nullify the crushing blow that the Bible message deals to Mormon belief. Biblical doctrine is Monotheistic (one God) and tolerates no other view. There is no room in Biblical theology for the Mormon "man-gods", as shown in the verses below: "God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?" Number 23:19 (KJV) "I will not execute My fierce anger; I will not destroy Ephraim again. For I am God and not man, the Holy one in your midst, and I will not come in wrath." The Holy Bible, Hosea 11:9 (NAS) "Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made." The Holy Bible, John 1:3 (NIV) "For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord? Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; He is more awesome than all who surround Him. O, Lord God Almighty, who is like you?" The Holy Bible, Psalm 89:6 - 8 (NIV) "I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols." The Holy Bible, Isaiah 42:8 (NIV) "Do not worship any other god, for the Lord whose name is jealous, is a jealous God." The Holy Bible, Exodus 34:14 (NIV) "You shall have no other gods before Me." The Holy Bible, Exodus 20:3 "Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of Hosts: I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God." The Holy Bible, Isaiah 44:6 (KJV) |
