DOCTRINAL ISSUES

Dr. MacArthur is found to be at odds with many groups, primarily because of his conviction that the Scripture is inerrant, must be taught as authoritative and a sufficient answer and foundation for all issues in life. One of the areas of contention was brought to the forefront with the release of his book, in 1988 which sparked the "Lordship Salvation" debate that is still going on today.

Dr. MacArthur is a member of the Independent Fundamental Churches of America (IFCA), and as a result of that membership and the position that was claimed by others that he held regarding the nature and efficacy of the blood of Christ, he appeared before the IFCA meeting in 1989 to be questioned about the issue and to explain and clarify his position. The transcript of that meeting can be viewed on this website: I.F.C.A. Meeting. Dr. MacArthur speaks for himself regarding the blood of Christ, salvation, dispensationalism and other issues as well.

Another issues was raised in regards to Dr. MacArthur's position regarding the Sonship of Jesus Christ and whether Jesus Christ was a son prior to the incarnation. Dr. MacArthur held to the view that Jesus Christ was not a son prior to the incarnation, and that sparked a great theological debate among mostly conservative Christian leaders. Dr. MacArthur changed his view and now holds the position that Jesus Christ was a Son from all eternity. His message and Biblical explanation regarding the change can be viewed on this website: HERE.

Another issue was stimulated by the release of another book, Charismatic Chaos, in 1992, which dealt with the issues and current excesses of the Charismatic movement, providing a Biblical view on the subject. Most Charismatics took issue with the premise that their beliefs were non-Biblical and again the debate continues today.

Just recently, another issue has been raised by Dr. MacArthur regarding the doctrine of salvation and the current belief of many, that a person does not need to hear the gospel or know about Jesus Christ in order to obtain salvation. This is known as the Wider Mercy Doctrine, and it has come to the forefront after the broadcast of a conversation between Robert Schuller and Billy Graham in Which Dr. Graham seemed to embrace the doctrine and Dr. Schuller confirmed his own belief. Dr. MacArthur deals with the subject in his 6 part sermon series on Deliverance: The Neglected Doctrine, which can be view on this web site: HERE.
