| FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS |
| Why doesn't God just get rid of all the bad things in the world instead of just letting them happen? |
|
Sounds like a simple solution, doesn't it? But the question assumes that everything in this life can be perfect, without a single difficulty, and concludes that God is the source of the problem because He allows bad things to happen without preventing their occurrence. The question is continually proposed as to why bad things happen to good people. It seems so hard to understand why a good husband and father could be killed at the hands of terrorists, leaving behind a widow and children without a father. Why do those things happen? Is it really the inaction or lack of caring by God, or is there something else going on that is not understood? This world is not perfect, either as to its structure or organization. It is a world in which the unforeseen can happen and there is the possibility that a catastrophe can happen simply as a result of the normal function of the universe. Great storms bring strong winds, tornados, cyclones, lightning and floods. Volcanoes erupt, earthquakes level entire cities and famine strikes entire continents. Meteors hit the earth, planes and rockets fall from the sky. These are just a few of the myriad difficulties faced during a single day on the earth The people who inhabit this planet are not perfect either. There are terrorists, murderers, thieves, liars and all manner of people who are without moral or spiritual character. There are people who have good intentions, but are just incompetent in their work, causing accidents resulting in injury or death. There are people who deliberately make the wrong choices, some driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs, who also cause accidents resulting in injury or death. There are people who make money by preying on the fears and frailties of others, causing grief, injury and sometimes death. There are people who simply make honest mistakes, but those actions result in injury or death. These are also just a few more of the myriad of difficulties faces during a single day on earth. So, why do human beings live in an imperfect universe and why are human beings imperfect themselves? If a person wishes to have God remove all the bad things, then He must start at the source. Where does the fault lie? If God would act, would you be willing to accept who He would state to be the responsible party at fault, and would you accept what He would do in order to remedy the situation? The answer is simple for most people; just have God do what they recommend and everything would be just fine. Humans who have lived 10, 30, 60, 80 or 100 years certainly know more than God who has lived for an eternity, right? Most people would be willing that God would eliminate all of the bad things in nature; there seems to be no difficulty there. But when it comes to human beings, that is quite a different story. Elimination of the "bad" and "corrupt" people seems like such a good idea until it reaches self. "I am not a bad person. In fact, I am a pretty good person," would be the claim of most everyone. But is that the statement of God? Remember the previous question, Would you be willing to accept who He would state to be the responsible party at fault? "Well, certainly I am not the person who causes all the bad things in the world," would be the statement of virtually every human being. The Bible says that at one time the universe, the world and human beings were perfect in their creation. However, something happened to change that condition; a catastrophe that affected the entire universe. Christians go to the Bible in order to find the answers to questions regarding the meaning and purpose of life. The Bible is not just a collection of religions ideas and virtuous sayings; it is also a historical record, documenting the origin and conduct of humanity in relation to God and this earth. In that history are found the reasons for the trouble in the world and the reasons why bad things happen to good people. There is also found what God says should be done to eliminate the problem, but also what He actually does because of His mercy and compassion toward human beings. THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY DEFINED BY GOD The guilt lies with humanity because of a voluntary choice that was made. Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned -- for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. In one of the most enigmatic passages in the entire book, Paul sets out to show how one man's death can provide salvation for many. To prove his point, he uses Adam to establish the principle that it is possible for one man's actions to inexorably affect many other people.THE CONDITION INSTITUTED BY THE RESPONSIBLE PARTY All human beings are in opposition to God and deliberately violate His commands and precepts. Will you keep to the ancient path which wicked men have trod, who were snatched away before their time, whose foundations were washed away by a river? They said to God, "Depart from us!" And "What can the Almighty do to them?" They say to God, "Depart from us! We do not even desire the knowledge of Your ways. Who is the Almighty, that we should serve Him, and what would we gain if we entreat Him?" But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your god, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AS DECLARED BY GOD All human beings are guilty before God and will be sentenced to physical and spiritual death. "Behold, all souls are Mine; the soul of the father as well as the soul of the son is Mine. The soul who sins will die." "The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment of the father's iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself." For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH ALL HUMAN BEINGS EXIST All human beings live in an altered state of existence, separated from God, separated from order, meaning and safety. To Adam He said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return." So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. But your iniquities have separated you from your god; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that He will not hear. "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher."Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." In the morning you will say, "If only it were evening!" and in the evening, "If only it were morning!" - because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.THE MEANS OF ESCAPE PROVIDED BY GOD Salvation is the means of escape, and guarantees the eternal security of the soul in the hands of God. God who is by nature a deliverer, the only deliverer, has a deliverance plan by which He will deliver the sinner from all those things that damn him. In fact, there may be no better way to understand the power of God's Spirit in the believing sinner's life than to understand that the Spirit is working a work of deliverance. When we talk about conversion and when we talk about regeneration, when we talk about new birth, being born again, new life, transformation...when we talk about these matters of grace we are really talking about being delivered from certain things. In fact, deliverance...defines what it means to be a Christian. "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." THE RESULTS OF FAILING TO ACCEPT THE MEANS OF ESCAPE PROVIDED BY GOD The difficulties, distress and ordeals in this life pale into insignificance in comparison to the judgment of God against those who have not accepted the salvation which He has provided. "The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself." For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."It is also imperative to know all the Bible teaches about salvation, seeing it contains the only divinely provided remedy for sin. Without such a provision, the sinner is both helpless and hopeless. Accepting this blood-bought salvation so freely offered, the sinner can experience freedom from the past with all its failure; victory in present days from sin's tyranny; and hope of escape from sin's full reward in hell. All who are lost are shut up to god's perfect, peerless salvation. There is no other way out of the gloom and despair of sin. "There is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we may be saved." (Acts 4:12). If this salvation is neglected and finally rejected, there can be no escape from the righteous judgments of God (II Thessalonians 1:9; Hebrews 2:3)."
